Workshop on the Alternative for Violence Project (AVP), Lu anda-Angola, October 2002 to August 2003

The Alternatives for Violence Project is an initiative of Angola 2000 involving the following organizations:

  • Angola 2000: Implementing Agency and lead agency for the Peace Network.
  • Alternatives for Violence Project South Africa: Responsible for the training and capacity building of the first batch of facilitators in Lu anda , Angola .
  • COIEPA: Assist with the identification of organizations that would benefit from the training and be utilized in the popularizations of the AVP methodology.

The project aimed to assist Angolan communities to understand, adapt, develop and implement alternative methods of settling of disputes, promotion of a culture of peace and improve civil society participation in post-conflict reconstruction. The project also sought to enhance the process of democratization and development of Angola by creating an environment for fruitful human relations between individuals, communities and authorities. This would be achieved by training and building the capacity of at least 260 carefully selec ted individuals and expec ted to yield 50 trained facilitators who would then play a leading role in expanding the project to other parts of the country.
